Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the body. Balance and co-ordination are very important and there is a lot of focus on the ‘core’. The ‘core’ consisting of the muscles of the abdomen, lower back and the hips. The centre is the pivotal point of the body and the abdominal area is often described as the second spine. It is the powerhouse of the Anatomy.
Pilates will improve mental and physical conditioning in all individuals. I practice the traditional Pilates method following the likes of the system of ‘Contrology’ created and started by Joseph Pilates. If you are looking for longer, leaner muscles, improved tone and posture and flexibility in the muscles and the joints then all these can be achieved through Pilates practice. It is adaptable to many fitness levels and needs. One also works the deep muscle stabilisers and fine motor as opposed to only gross motor control. An overall mind body connection is established.
In Summary Pilates promotes:
"Ideally, our muscles should obey our will.
Reasonably, our will should not be dominated by the reflex actions of our muscles"
